Connected Vessels

2018 - Steel, Trumpet Honeysuckle, Swamp Milkweed 24’ x 24’ x 12’

Installed in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park, Connected Vessels is built with pipes of different diameters, some salvaged leftovers from the “Rover” fracked natural gas pipeline. These pipes carry water and air, hold soil. There is a forged open water lily on top at the intersection of the arches, drawing rainwater down into the collection vessel below, which then spills over into four channels delivering water into planters.

The planters are set facing each of the cardinal directions. They hold gravel, sand, soil, compost, worm castings, peat moss, as well as trumpet honeysuckle and swamp milkweed plants. If four people blow through the pipes running up the arches they can play a C major chord, plus a low G.
